4000 MILES
By Amy Herzog
Directed by Kenneth Moraleda
“Nancye Hayes’ return to the STC stage is a joy and a privilege” ★★★★ The Sydney Morning Herald
The “splendid” (Stage Noise) and iconic Nancye Hayes returns to Sydney Theatre Company for the first time in two decades to perform in this “beautifully poignant” (Broadway World) portrayal of the love between a grandmother and grandson. Amy Herzog’s beloved work of contemporary American theatre is a laugh-out-loud story “about kinship, and the human need for connection at a time when we are increasingly isolated” (Suzy Goes See).
Played by the “eminently watchable” (Suzy Goes See) Shiv Palekar (The Tempest), 21-year-old Leo hasn’t been heard from in weeks. Not since his cross-country cycling trip went horribly wrong, so, no one is more surprised than his 91-year-old grandmother Vera (Hayes) when Leo turns up on her doorstep in the middle of the night.
As these characters settle into life as unlikely roommates, 4000 Miles unravels into “a heartwarming and humorous tale of generations coming together” (Broadway World).
With “strikingly tender” (Suzy Goes See) direction by STC Resident Director Kenneth Moraleda (American Signs) and featuring Shirong Wu (White Pearl) and Ariadne Sgouros who “electrify in their appearances” (Limelight), 4000 Miles is one of the best pieces of new writing to emerge from the US in recent years. Filled with small, revelatory and humorous moments, this new production is “a top-notch staging of Amy Herzog’s warm, wise and pithy play.” (Limelight).
